Three reasons why exercising outdoors is better than exercising indoors
1. Sunshine opportunity = natural vitamin D. While vitamin D is available in small amounts in some foods, it is important to get regular sunlight exposure to maintain healthy vitamin D levels. It is a nutrient that is needed to support healthy bones and cognitive health. What better way to support your muscles, bone and brain health than by exercising in the sun? It seems like a two birds, one stone situation to me. Vitamin D may also help against depression, and lessened vitamin D may be a large contributor to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) in the colder months of the year!
2 . Fresh Air & Nature. Outdoor air has been found to be less polluted than indoor air (this can vary depending on where you are located and if there have recently been any fires). Exercising outside provides you with fresh air which is especially important if you spend the majority of your time indoors. Spending time outside in nature is especially calming for the nervous system and can help reduce stress. Outdoor yoga class, anyone?
3. Agility. Walking outside on uneven terrain uses more muscles, expends more energy and keeps the mind engaged as you move. Trail running, hiking, and HIIT can all get an added boost from outdoor performance. Exploring different terrains like sand, rocks, hills and winding paths can each give us new opportunities for resistance training.
